Chapter 19 - Did I Do That?

Viera

To Viera’s left, Scout thought he was speaking to Horax. In the living room, Thorn waved her hand in the doorway. She mumbled to herself. “There’s nothing there … but I can see it. What’s going on?”

She felt so drained. What is wrong with me? I felt fine while I was baking. I’ve made pancakes so many times. Though, I was really focused right up until the moment Thorn got here and scared me out of my thoughts.

Viera shook herself from her musings. It wasn’t important. She had to figure out what was wrong with Thorn and Scout. “Scout, Horax isn’t here. You know that, right?”

“What? Sure he is. He’s right—” Scout shook his head. “Where did he go? And why wouldn’t he talk to me?” He looked around. “He’s never not talked to me before. Mom! Where did Horax go?” Scout’s eyes widened. “Who is that?”

Frustrated, Viera pulled out her phone and called Betsy. Her friend picked up right away. “Viera. I thought you were going to Montana with Thorn today. Why are you calling? Is everything okay?”

“I don’t know. Both Thorn and Scout are acting weird.” Viera could hear the frantic note in her voice.

“Weird how?” Betsy had slowed down, as if her pacing out her words would calm Viera down.

“We were eating pancakes, and then they both said they could see dragons.” Viera felt her eyes misting up and her voice began to sound frantic. “What’s going on? Why are they seeing things? What did I do? Is it permanent?”

“First of all, are you seeing anything? Is it something with the food?”

Viera searched the room. Thorn was cautiously walking through the room and Scout had a frustrated look on his face. “No. I don’t see anything but what’s really here.”

Betsy made a small sound as if making a mental list. “Where did the food come from?”

“I made it.”

“Um-hm. And what did you make? Cereal? Donuts?”

“No!” Viera was getting annoyed. “Pancakes and bacon.”

“Oh! You make good pancakes. That sounds good.” Betsy’s momentary distraction amused Viera. Her friend always thought with her stomach. “Okay, tell me about you, my friend. It’s morning. How are you feeling?”

“Me? Um, frantic. Confused. Annoyed that you’re worried about me when something is obviously wrong with them.”

Betsy scoffed. “Did you wake up tired? You’re normally an obnoxious morning person.”

Viera opened her mouth to answer then shut it. “Actually, no. I woke up early, with a ton of energy, that’s why I decided to cook. I made coffee right away in case Thorn woke up, and then started cooking.”

“Okay, tell me more.”

“There’s so much to learn, Betsy. You’ve had a million years to learn everything, but I’m so behind. I feel like I have no time and three proficiencies to master. I’ll never get my feeble brain around it all.”

“We already discussed this. You have plenty of time. Don’t try to rush anything.”

“Okay. Well, I was trying to think about what hologram I wanted to create.”

“Wait.” Betsy stopped her. “You were focusing on a magic lesson while baking?”

“Yes.
